Initially I was very encouraged. Unfortunately, the mainstream media now seems far more interested in what I said when I was 17 or what my girlfriend looks like rather than, say, the largest program of suspicionless surveillance in human history.
In the end, the greatest tragedy of the current right-wing ascendancy is that it’s reduced conservatism to this: automatic, thoughtless, reflexive rejection of anything even slightly different or unfamiliar. It’s defined by its intellectual shallowness, tribalism and lack of curiosity. It’s not even about differences over facts and reason so much as its imperviousness to them, and hostility to the very notion of employing them in rational public discourse. Conservatism is an honourable tradition. It doesn’t deserve to be debased like this.
Every now and then I like to piggyback on Daren’s traffic. I have no shame.

I’m so angry I literally can’t sleep.
Until the Mayor actually has blood on his hands Mike Harris will remain Canada’s Biggest Asshole, but damn, Robbo comes pretty close.
Whoever put this together, Toronto owes you a beer.
So why would we expect him to change now? Of course, he’s fighting tooth and nail against new revenue tools for transit expansion. He doesn’t give a shit about transit.
Another ugly truth about the worst mayor in human memory.
Beating the #teabaggers and their paymasters at their own game.
This is fucking priceless. I know I go on (no, really — I do) about changing the conversation and public discourse and controlling the narrative, but this is a wonderful illustration of why. At its essence, it isn’t just about memes and shallow catchphrases and the manipulation of simple-minded disengaged dullards — it’s about engagement, citizenship, and literacy. And the Public Good.
We’ve backed down from fighting the big fights or trying to right the big wrongs. There is no grand enterprise. We simply content ourselves with bitching about small potatoes like how many TTC fare collectors make a six figure salary as if putting a stop to that is going to miraculously feed our hungry and house our homeless. It’s like some demented rationalization that goes to prove governments can’t do anything right so we should stop expecting them to. If the 1st-century C.E. population was anything like it is today, so petty, resentful, small-minded, I’m thinking Jesus got himself crucified in order to escape them not save them.
@Cityslikr is back, and kicking ass.
Asked to name what she regards as the highest priority project in the city, Horwath seemed to indicate that politics — and not sound transit planning — has been the NDP’s guide: “I think it’s those neighbourhoods in the outskirts of this city that aren’t receiving the transit they need.” When a reporter asked about the Downtown Relief Line, she replied: “I think it’s a mugs game to try to divide this city in terms of who needs transit more. We have to address all of these concerns.”
Sounds to me like the NDP leader thinks the DRL is all about relieving congestion for downtowners. Maybe she needs to turn off the Ford’s radio show and realize the value of the line in Scarborough and North York.
