Mr “Welcome to the real world”. Sexism happens. Always has, always will. Might as well suck it up and deal with it. Try to change society? What are you, mad? I don’t like it either, sunshine, but just be good and don’t make a fuss.

Refusing to debate abortion rights isn't...
There’s a lot of sound and fury, understandably, about Stephen Woodworth’s attempt to reignite the abortion debate. It’s hard not to be struck, right off the bat, by the disingenuous bullshit surrounding it. Woodworth likes to characterize his initiative as an honest inquiry about when life begins. The Harper machine insists that Woodworth is acting on his own, and that this...

More on charities and politics: the Fraser...
While the federal government and pro-oil lobbyists have taken aim at environmental charities for allegedly violating the Canadian Revenue Agency’s legal limits for “political activity”, the Fraser Institute and its charitable status remain unquestioned. And as the Koch Foundation’s tax data shows, they’ve received a significant amount of “foreign funding” to help influence Canadian...

I’ve gone on and on about the need to cultivate critical-thinking skills in the continuing battle against stupidity.
It’s not an easy fight, given the resources devoted to cultivating it. There’s a great deal invested in keeping people disengaged, distracted, and too messed up to reflect and think things through. For evidence of that we need look no farther than the extent to...

Politics, the charitable sector, and the public...
There’s been some discussion recently about the role of charitable organizations, and by extension other NGOs, in social advocacy and the debate over public policy. In an essay for the Star this past weekend, Alan Broadbent calls for just that in arguing for more overt political activity from Canadian charities.
It’s not hard to discern the context for Mr. Broadbent’s...

Corporate Blogging, the Bell Tolls For Thee:... →
92y:
We’re a non-profit so we don’t really identify as being “corporate” (though obviously we’re a business) but we recently made the decision to ditch our “primary” blog. To be honest, we had been thinking about it for a couple years. We’ve been on Tumblr since 2008 and while we tried to differentiate the content, the redundancy of two blogging platforms soon became apparent. Tumblr is a blog...

Via @hamutaldotan: Rob Ford Should Participate in...
via torontoist.com
A terrific piece from Hamutal Dotan. Read it now.
She goes through all the political, ethical and symbolic arguments in favour of Rob Ford’s participation, so I won’t repeat them here. The only observation I’d make is to wonder, who in god’s name is advising him these days?
We can debate about whether this is a big-picture or little-picture thing,...

@NYTimesKrugman on #austerity and Europe's...
What we’re actually seeing, however, is complete inflexibility. In March, European leaders signed a fiscal pact that in effect locks in fiscal austerity as the response to any and all problems. Meanwhile, key officials at the central bank are making a point of emphasizing the bank’s willingness to raise rates at the slightest hint of higher inflation.
So it’s hard to avoid a sense of despair....

… it is one more nail into the coffin of the delusional American Right-Wing mind-set. Finally, the South Americans have had enough of pandering to American delusions. That’s what Nikolas Kozloff’s article in ALJAZEERA, “The Summit of the Americas, WikiLeaks and the failed war on drugs”, which gets right to the nitty-gritty:
Unhappy with the failed war on drugs,...

I’m sorry to add to the headache, but I’m afraid I must ask you to stop picking up my posts at Progressive Bloggers.
There’s been a lot of heat and intemperate language involved in this, but for me the bottom line is that you can’t entertain the idea of putting women’s reproductive autonomy in issue and still call yourself progressive.

It’s been written up here and here, but those were based on the chartered version from last Tuesday. Saturday’s performance was a regular Queen Street run, with passengers getting on and off all the way along the route — making the pizza delivery that much more of an achievement.
Thanks again to Goldsbie and the other tweeters.
